Here are some of the most popular Half Moon Bay beaches:

Half Moon Bay State Beach: This beach is divided into four parts: Francis Beach, Venice Beach, Dunes Beach, and Roosevelt Beach. Francis Beach is the most popular of the four, with amenities like restrooms, showers, picnic areas, and a campground. Venice Beach is popular with surfers, while Dunes Beach and Roosevelt Beach are more secluded and perfect for a quiet getaway.

Poplar Beach: This beach is located at the base of Poplar Street in Half Moon Bay. It is a wide, sandy beach with plenty of space for sunbathing, picnicking, and playing beach volleyball. It is also a popular spot for surfing.

Miramar Beach: This beach is located near the Miramar Inn and Restaurant in Half Moon Bay. It is a small, quiet beach with calm waters, making it a great spot for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Although the ocean is always unpredictable and can be very unsafe, Miramar Beach is one of our favorite picks for families with smaller children because the surf is generally more calm than other Half Moon Bay beaches. Although calmer, it can still be very dangerous, so always keep your children safe with proper supervision and safeguards in place!

Cowell Ranch Beach: This beach is located south of Half Moon Bay and is accessible via a dirt road. It is a secluded beach with towering cliffs, tide pools, and plenty of wildlife to observe.

Mavericks Beach: This beach is famous for the Mavericks surf contest, which is held here every year. The waves at Mavericks can reach up to 60 feet, making it one of the most challenging surf spots in the world. It is not recommended for swimming, but it is a great spot for watching the surfers.

And that’s just the beginning! A short drive to the south is Año Nuevo State Reserve where the gigantic elephant seals roam, and to the North isFitzgerald Marine Reserve, Montara State Beach and Montara Mountain.

Half Moon Bay State Beaches

Año Nuevo State Reserve

This 4,000 acre Reserve is a major gathering area for northern elephant seals, which may be seen year-around.
