The Park is located in the town of Dayton, one of Nevada's first permanent settlements The Rock Point Mill, built in 1861, was once used to process rich silver ore from nearby Virginia City. Remnants of the mill are still visible within the park, just west of U.S. 50.
Fort Churchill to Wellington Back Country Byway
A historic town and frontier fort await the visitor along this back country drive. This scenic desert off-road driving tour parallels the Carson River and climbs into the rugged Pine Nut Mountains. Four-wheel drive or high-clearance vehicles are recommended for the climb over the Pine Nut Mountains. Summer and fall are best seasons to travel the byway. It takes roughly four to five hours to drive this byway.

Incorporated December 17, 1862, the town at one point was home to at least 8,000 residents. Prosperity was sustained for a period of 20 years between 1868 and 1888 by mining the Comstock Lode.

Virginia City is one of the oldest established communities in Nevada. Like many cities and towns in the state, Virginia City was a mining boomtown; in fact it is one of the most famous boomtowns in the Old West, as it virtually appeared overnight as a result of the Comstock Lode silver strike of 1859.
